Door Handle Replacement

It's worth replacing door handles if you don't like the way they look, or if they're difficult to use. Installing the new handle on your door is simple if you've got patience.

Modern door handles are equipped with cover plates that hide the screws for an attractive appearance. However, you'll have to attach them separately if the new handle doesn't already have them.

Removing the old Handle

Door handles aren't just an important for their aesthetic value to your home, but they're also essential for security as they let you lock and unlock your door. However, over time the door handle could lose its grip, become loose, or appear old and worn. This is a sign that it's probably time for a replacement.

One of the first signs that your door handle is in need of replacing is if it's becoming difficult to operate. This is a serious issue since you won't be in a position to lock or unlock the door which could put you and your family at risk.

It is also recommended to replace your door handle if it is damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be quite dangerous, especially in the event that your children or senior family members struggle to open it and end up trapped inside. Fortunately, it's fairly simple to fix a damaged door handle by simply replacing the old one.

Modern door handles are usually standard sizes and should be able to fit any door. If you're not sure if your new door handle will work, try removing the old one and measuring the holes in its housing. This will allow you to purchase the right size door handle.

The easiest way to take off your old door handle is to take it off of the door. This is usually done using a screw driver. Some door handles have a cover plate which hides the screws that mount them. It is necessary to remove it to get to the screws. After removing the handle that was previously used, take note of the way in which the spindle is attached. This will help you align the new handle.

You can also remove the door handle by removing it from the latch mechanism. You can use a screwdriver for removing the door handle. But, you'll need to locate the small latch which is located on the edge trim piece. After removing  upvc door handle , unscrew the handle and strike plate. Then remove the latch from the edge of the door.

Take off the Strike Plate

If you are replacing the handle, you'll want to replace the latch plate, which is the hole that the door's latch is inserted into when it closes. The new handles will come with two latch plates which are a circular and a rectangular plate (see the image above which illustrates the components of a door handle). If you have an rectangular latch plate, you can replace it with a round one. This will allow the latch to be able to hook onto the strike plate and make the handle more convenient.

The first step is to remove the screw that holds the old latch plate in place. These screws are often tight, and may require some force to loosen. If you are able, it could be beneficial to have a second person help with this process.

Once the screws are removed, the latch plate should slide out of the door easily. If the latch plate is stuck or refuses to move, use a small file to scrape the edges. This can sometimes free up the plate.

You can now move on to making the new door strike plate for installation. With the wood screws that came with your new handles, screw the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Be careful not to tighten too much the screws, as this may damage the strike plate.

If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in the right position, try closing and opening the door to determine if it closes and latches correctly. If it does not you'll have to adjust the strikeplate upwards or down, forward or back until the door shuts correctly.

If the door is still moving or jiggles, you may have to expand your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more prevalent with older doors, but could be due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are too shallow or not the right size for the latch, or from damaged or broken strike plate that is damaged or broken. If this is the case, follow the same procedure to adjust the strike plate, using a metal file instead of a chisel and hammer.

Remove the Latch

The latch is an angled metal piece that slides into and out of a hole on the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes this latch forward and allows you to open the door. It also connects to an opening in the frame of the door to keep your door shut. If your door shakes when you close it, changing the latch could be all you need to fix it.

It's hard to see the screws that secure the latch to the door, however there's usually a small slot on the trim plate that permits you to insert a screwdriver into the slot and pry it off. After removing the trim plate, you should be able to remove the latch and the bolts that hold it, as well as the spindle in position.

If the latch won't release you can try using an old-fashioned paper clip or tool to spring it loose from the handle mechanism. Place the item into the recessed latch slot and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel handle and latch begin to break off. You may have to do this several times before the latch is loose enough to allow it to be pulled out.

After the old latch has been removed and the old latch is removed, you should be able to slide the new latch into the slot with no difficulties. Make sure the latch is correctly positioned in the slot and is aligned with the screw chambers, and then use your new screws to fasten it to the strike plate and door frame.

Before you install the new handle, make sure to measure your current backset (the distance from the center of the large hole on the front of the door to the edge). Also, ensure that the latch size on the new handle is a good match to this measurement.

If you are replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if your previous lock cylinder is damaged, then you'll require an entirely new one. If you are not changing locks, a new lock should fit inside the recess you have already installed, and also work with your current keys. Choose a latch that has rectangular cover plates that match your existing handles.

Remove the cover plate

You can replace your old door handles with a new rose and lever designs to enhance the appearance of your home. You can purchase complete sets that include matching escutcheons as well as privacy adaptor kits.

To replace an internal door handle, remove the cover plate (or rose), which covers the screws and mechanism. Use a flathead for removing the cover plate. It could have an opening on one side or be held by a pin.

When the cover plate is removed take off the screw that holds the interior handle in place and put it aside. You'll also want to remove the screws that are holding the latch and the plates inside and the latch plate, which can be done by loosening them using a Philips screwdriver. Remove the inner plates and latch from the door. Place them aside.

Most doors have an opening between the door jamb and the edge of the frame that allows for a handle, but not all have. If yours does not allow for a handle, you'll have to make a hole through the door. The procedure for this is similar to the procedure opening a door using locks, but you'll have to be extra careful not to damage the door or frame.

After drilling the holes then you'll need to install new door knob screws. Choose the same size as your old screws to avoid getting the handle that is too loose or tight. It's also necessary to install the new latch plate and strike rod, which aren't included with most door handle sets.
